1 mil covers 18 in (45.7 cm) at 500 yd.
Range a target
250 yd (229 m)
Between 238 and 263 yd if the reading is off by one step (0.1 mil). That is how much a small reading error moves the range.
Size a target
21.6 in (54.9 cm)
How the mil relation works
One mil covers 3.6 inches at 100 yards, or 1 meter at 1,000 meters. So yards = target size in inches x 27.78 / mils. An 18 inch plate that reads 2 mils is 250 yards away. For MOA the number is 95.49 instead of 27.78, and for inches per 100 yards it is 100. The math uses the small-angle approximation, which is off by less than 0.01 percent for readings under 10 mil. Your eye is the bigger error: a reading that is off by 0.1 mil moves the range by several percent at long distance.
